date. January - March 2023

project type. Group

objective of project. Build a game/application prototype with interacting system loops

role. Art Lead

My team and I thought it would be interesting to use a Dialogue Tree System to create our own visual novel game in Unity. It was challenging to link every item and dialogue to one another but I believe it was a good experience.

Dialogue Tree System

The choices that players choose for the prompts in the game will affect other elements in the game. Elements such as the questions that will be shown in pop ups, answers, as well as unlocking hidden items, all change depending on what the player chooses.

The order of items that they interact with is also important. Certain items have hidden questions that will not be shown unless players discover the trigger. The trigger can either be interacting with a certain item, obtaining a clue that is linked to the hidden item, or just simply hiding in plain sight.

Example #1

The player has found a photo frame and is prompted with 3 options. Depending on which answer they pick, the next dialogue will be different.

Example #2

The player has found an item that doesn't give a prompt. This means that the player has not found the trigger item to prompt the question. They will have to follow the clues provided in order to unlock the item.

Art Assets

Most of the art assets were drawn by me with the exception of a few due to time constraint. Software used was Figma to create all of the menu screens, items and background.
